Community groups in Helston and The Lizard are being offered assistance in seeking funding towards creating or refurbishing outdoor spaces such as play areas and village greens.

The "Living Spaces" fund offers grants of between £1,000 and £100,000 to non-profit neighbourhood groups keen to improve their environment.

Schools, local councils and public bodies are not eligible for the funding.

Tom Jane, South Kerrier outreach worker for the Kerrier Healthy Living Centre, said the money could be used to improve run-down playgrounds, create a community garden or clean up a village square or green.

Tom is available to assist local groups in filling in the "Living Spaces" application form, which is available by calling 0845 6003190, e-mail: info@living-spaces.org.uk or at www.living-spaces.org.uk.

Tom is also considering setting up a local network supporting organisations which look after play areas, encouraging groups to work together to access cheaper insurance, play equipment and lower maintenance costs.

Anyone involved with a local play area who would be interested in joining such a group is asked to contact Tom on 01326 241631.

If there is sufficient interest, an initial meeting is likely to be held early in the autumn.
