Plans are well under way for this year's Helston Carnival, due to take place on Saturday, August 30, as part of the Helston Harvest Fair weekend.

Revived two years ago after a gap of almost a decade, the carnival has since proved a spectacular success, with plenty of creative entries and support from many local organisations and individuals.

Organiser Sue Atkinson said she hoped the 2003 event would be even better.

"Most of those who took part last year are going to participate again, but I'm hoping there will be some new entries too," she said.

"We had a special cup for the pubs and clubs last year but none of them showed any interest. I've written to them all this year and hopefully they will respond."

Mrs Atkinson added that for anyone seeking inspiration, there was a large red dragon available, which could perhaps be incorporated into an entry.

There are a total of 11 classes in the carnival, including sections for floats, walkers and vintage vehicles.

Judging will take place at Helston Cricket Club before the procession makes its way through the town to the fairground, led by Helston Town Band.

Several youngsters will be particularly looking forward to the day, including Chantelle Greenaway, who is to be Miss Harvest Fair.

Also in their best outfits will be twins Ross and Lowenna Atkinson, Fairy King and Queen for the day, and their attendant, Emmi Atkinson.

Helpers are needed for the carnival, and also for other Harvest Fair events including the dog show on the Saturday afternoon and the horticultural and craft show on the Monday.

Carnival enquiries can be made to Mrs Atkinson on 01326 574640, while anyone willing to help out with the dog show is asked to contact Rosemary Jenkin on 01326 564333.
