An innovative public transport scheme will be giving visitors from across the county easier access to RNAS Culdrose on Air Day.

The "Airbus" scheme - a new direct transport link on to the air station - offers people the chance to buy a ticket combining admission to the event with the return bus fare on First and Truronian services from anywhere in Cornwall.

As an incentive, the bus tickets, costing £8 for adults and £4 for children, are cheaper than those bought at the gate by £2 and £1 respectively.

In addition to saving money, visitors using the "Airbus" scheme will bypass the queues that traditionally build up on Air Day since the buses will enter the base via a special route across the airfield to an exclusive bus stop in the heart of the public arena.

The "Airbus" service, believed to be the first of its kind in Cornwall, will be available from 9am to 1pm, stopping for the main flying display and then resuming at 5pm to take visitors home.

Special arrangements are also being put in place to help ease congestion on surrounding roads.

The planned improvements include additional road signs, advance warnings for through-traffic recommending use of the A30 to avoid Helston, temporary traffic lights on the A394 near Edgcumbe and revised admission and parking procedures.

With up to 30,000 visitors on the day, officials at the base have admitted some congestion is inevitable, but are hoping the new plans will help ease the situation.
