At the end of this summer term Carnkie/Piece School closes its doors for the last time to pupils and staff after 161 years of educating local families, covering six generations.

To mark the occasion a "Grand Reunion" is planned at the school on July 12, starting at 5pm, and again on July 13 from 10am to 4pm, for past pupils and staff.

Roy Blewett of Four Lanes, who is organising the reunion, says the school was formed in 1842 when the school building was given under lease at one shilling per annum from the Basset family to the Illogan School Board.

Roy invites past pupils and staff members to contact him as soon as possible on 01209 216579.

In 1842 the first head was Mrs Johanna Billing and in 1873 when the school became mixed Richard Blamey was the headmaster of the boys and Mrs Harriet Opie was in charge of the girls.

On September 2, 1871 the school was formally handed over to the education authority as the "Carnkie School and Illogan Boys School" by G L Basset Esq.

Roy says there are some interesting excerpts from the school logs, such as in 1876 when a visiting committee concluded: "A little soap and water would improve the appearance of the boys.
