FOOTBALLING firefighters from the Taunton area have visited New York to pay tribute to their New York counterparts killed in the September 11 terrorist atrocities.

The 22 players from Somerset Fire Brigade stayed in a hotel near Ground Zero during their trip, when they drew 1-1 with a firefighters' team from the Big Apple.

The event followed a charity football match in Taunton last year when a number of New York firefighters flew over for the weekend.

Team captain Andy Burridge said: "Ground Zero is a very quiet place -- there was a lot of work going on, but there are still plaques for everyone who died.

"It was eerie thinking how many firefighters died in the one incident."

The visit also included a ride on a roller coaster in Coney Island, a fire boat trip on the Hudson River, a trip around the city on a fire truck and a tour of a new fire house in Harlem.
