Playing conditions were fine for the Premier League fixture between Troon and Newquay at Treslothan, but weather was unable to rescue the home club from their dip in form as new boys Newquay just managed to keep their noses in front after a brave effort by Troon.

Fortunes swayed as Newquay built a big total, but Troon who, at times, came under the cosh, held out as they showed commendable spirit in a sterling finish with vital scores coming from Chris Rowe, Damien Trease and Nigel Hambly.

Home all-rounder Martin Jenkin struck an early blow for Troon, holding a return catch to send the prolific run maker Tim Marrian back to the pavilion with a single on the board.

Walton and Harrison then took charge to add 101 runs.

Alan Shears, the third change bowler, struck twice in quick succession, with wickets at 102 and 105. Walton (40) hit four boundary strokes with Harrison going one better.

Ryan Driver and Ollie Turnbull, a well-known player from the Mining Division (Mount Hawke), took control to add 107 as Troon tried six bowlers.

Turnbull's stroke play brought three sixes and four fours, then he was adjudged lbw to Jenkin. Purchase came and soon went, but it was Jacques and Driver who took charge, adding 48 runs to finish on 264-5 from 55 overs. Shears and Jenkin shared the wickets.

Troon had started the game with nine players and lacked a scorer, but two other players were soon called on.

Newquay scorer Mrs Drew deserved a pat on the back for keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

To add to the problems, only one of the two umpires arrived, Mr J Edwards having car problems.

The much smaller than normal crowd did, however, have good value for their money.

In reply openers Kevin Roberts 33 and Alan Shears added 62 runs before Roberts was the first wicket to fall. He hit three fours in his 33.

Shears (25) went without out addition, as did skipper Jason Weeks in a very brief visit to the crease, Harrison taking two wickets.

Rowe, with Trease and Nigel Hambly, kept going for the runs against a varied Newquay attack to muster a most creditable 230 for the loss of six wickets to earn a draw, Newquay winning 14 points with Troon gaining 9.

Newquay are third with Troon seventh with all Premier clubs having played 11 fixtures.

Troon play away to St Just on Saturday and the second team are home to Constantine in a division three West fixture. The third XI play at St Just on Sunday.
