Mullion Golf Club held a very successful festival last week. A full programme of events was completed apart from the teams of four competition which had to be postponed on Thursday due to extreme foggy conditions.

The week started on Monday with a open men's greensome competition. Bruce Carter and Damien Hallett of the host club came first with 40 points. Head greenkeeper at Mullion, Gordon Tamblyn and his assistant, Tim Ellis, were second with 39 points followed by other local players, Peter Moore and Andy Backhouse on 38 points and Peter Oliver and George Davis with 37 points.

West Cornwall players filled the top positions in the open mixed Better Ball played on Tuesday. Pip Pool and Caroline Hosking came out on top with 44 points followed by club mates Phil Sedgeman and Debbie Bassett-Harding on 43. Michael Cook and Pamela Stanley from the host club were third with 42 points followed on 41 points by Damien Hallett and Jane Henderson also from Mullion.

Brian Martin of Budock Vean won the Dennis Bray seniors competitions held on Wednesday with 26 points. Second and third spots were filled by local players Adrian Songhurst and Brian Robinson both with 35 points and they were followed by the West Cornwall captain, Gerry Parker, and J Handy of St Austell, both with 34 points. The best Mullion prize went to Nick Proctor with 33 points and J Marriott of St Austell won the best visitor prize with the same score

In a complete contrast to the weather conditions of the previous day, Mullion ladies held their open day on Friday in idyllic conditions. The competition took the form of a pairs Better Ball Stableford. The winners were local player Jill Simmons and her partner Carol Ryder from Tehidy Park who returned 42 points, edging out the Mullion pairing of Sally Markham and vice captain Gill Bayliss on count back. In third place were the West Cornwall pairing of Rachel Perkin and Gill Cattran with 41 points, pipping Lynn Brooks and Tamsin Lewis from Truro on count back.

The front nine prize went to Jeannie White and Nickie Flett from Mullion and local ladies captain Sharon Moyle and her junior partner Siobhan Murphy won the back nine. In the afternoon nine hole foursomes competition, local players Margaret Richardson and Viv Shephard come out on top with 21 points followed by A Uren from West Cornwall and D Williams of Cape Cornwall with 19 points. Third place went to local players, Margaret Howells and Barbara Priestly with 18 points.

It was the turn of the men again on Saturday when a full field competed in an open stableford competition. Local players dominated the prizes with Don Neil coming out on top with 43 points. Dennis McQuillan was second with 40 points pipping Jason Grigor on count back. Fourth place went to local junior Ben Wilson with 39 points and Hugh Phillips came fifth with 36 points.

The club is hoping to hold the postponed team competition on Friday, July 11.
