Another crash on the A394 at Trewennack has prompted renewed concerns over highway safety in the hamlet.

Six people were taken to hospital following an accident near the chapel on Sunday afternoon involving a red Peugeot 306 and silver Vauxhall Astra.

Two people had to be released from the badly-damaged vehicles by firefighters using special cutting equipment.

A 39-year-old man from Truro who was driving the Peugeot suffered facial injuries and a leg fracture, while his front-seat passenger, a 46-year-old man from Camborne, received bruising.

The driver of the Astra, a 54-year-old man from Falmouth, suffered minor cuts and his front seat passenger, a 49-year-old woman, also from Falmouth, sustained a shoulder injury.

A couple from Kent, both in their seventies, who were travelling in the back seat of the Astra, were more seriously injured and were admitted to intensive care at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The crash came just days after another accident in Trewennack, where villagers have long been campaigning for improved road safety measures.

Residents have called for plans for a bypass to be implemented without delay, and in the meantime have secured a reduced speed limit through the hamlet and additional signage.

At a Helston town council meeting last week, Inspector Rachel Tills, from Helston police station, said enforcing speed limits in Trewennack was difficult because there was nowhere to pull motorists over.

She added that accident figures for the A394 as a whole had seen a significant reduction over the past six months.
