TWO important landmarks in the centre of Martock are set to receive a £34,000 enhancement.

The historic Pinnacle and Market House form the 'symbolic' centre of the village, but have unfortunately been subjected to the downfall of modern life in recent years - traffic!

Motorists have knocked the Pinnacle down three times in living memory and now Martock residents want to prevent his from happening again.

The Pinnacle has just been reinstated after the latest incident and is now protected by temporary kerbing.

Investigations have been carried out to see if it would be possible to stop traffic from passing between the Pinnacle and the Market House and members of South Somerset District Council's Area North committee were due to hear yesterday (Wednesday) that a feasibility study had proved successful.

The council's area development manager, Vega Sturgess, said: "The setting of these important features deserves enhancement and Somerset County Council has devised a scheme to pave around the Market House and up to the Pinnacle.

"This will improve pedestrian safety and improve the overall appearance of the area. The scheme has been agreed and supported by a working group from Martock Parish Council."

The enhancement scheme also includes the reinstatement of a horse trough - which was donated to Martock more than 100 years ago in memory of the horses that died in the Boer War.

Very few of these memorials are still in existence today, but the parish council hopes to have the trough re-dedicated during the Remembrance Day Parade in November of this year.
