POOL School is appealing to local businesses, and anyone else, to help raise the last £11,000 in its bid to become a centre of excellence in business studies.

Over the last 18 months the school has raised £39,000 through fundraisers, parents and sponsorship from local companies.

Earlier in the year, headteacher Zelma Hill, thought enough funds had been raised but changes in the eligibility rules and sponsorship not materialising have meant the school has not yet raised enough money. If it doesn't raise the final amount by the beginning of October it could lose out on the deal all together.

To qualify the school has to raise a third of the money needed. It has to have a community partnership working with business partners, local primary schools, Cornwall College and the local community to help drive up standards.

The school has the challenge of raising £50,000 in order to bring almost 12 times as much into the school and local community. Match funding is provided by the Department for Education and Skills.

The school plans to use some of the money to build a new Information Technology/Business Suite, which is much needed as the two new ICT rooms are already fully booked.

Mrs Hill says local businesses have been extremely supportive to the school and have contributed generously with their time for work placements and business mentors.

The school has until the end of September to raise the funds otherwise it will not be able to submit its bid. If you can help, please contact Mrs Hill at the school on 01209 712220.
