The chairman and key members of the Trevithick Day organising committee plus reperesentatives of Camborne town council met Sergeant David Aynsley, the neighbourhood team leader for the Camborne area, to discuss police demands that could put the future of Camborne's community event in doubt.
Police will no longer back Trevithick Day in its present form because of increasing corporate liability issues.
Trevithick Day administrator Marj Rowland said: "We will try to be flexible and find a compromise about safety issues."
Policing the day is said to cost about £17,458 which almost equals the budget for Trevithick Day. Paul Barnes, Trevithick Day committee chairman, has called for organisers of events large and small to band together to put across their views. "If we are not careful these new demands will rip the hearts out of communities throughout Cornwall," he said. He would like anyone who has a view to express about the new police proposals to contact him c/o Trevithick Day, PO Box 48, Camborne TR14 8YR.
