CHANGES to traffic flow on the Ilminster bypass will turn it into a 'suicide alley' for law breaking drivers - that's the opinion of haulier and town councillor Mike Henly.
After seeing a partially completed priority traffic scheme on the road Mr Henly said, in his view, the changes were a step backwards, and likely to make things 'ten times' worse.
The Highways Agency - which is responsible for the A303 - disagrees with Mr Henly, and says the scheme has been worked on by safety research teams in consultation with local authorities.
New road markings on the bypass allow overtaking in only one direction at a time, and are designed to cut down head-on accidents.
However Mr Henly says that because there will be fewer opportunities to overtake, car drivers held up behind lorries will become so frustrated they will put themselves in danger.
