THE HEAD teacher of a village school near Wellington has written to parents to quash fears over the school's future.

Peter Pearson, of Nynehead Primary School, took the decision to inform parents following a "sensationalist and inaccurate" story in a local newspaper.

The report claimed the school faces two options over its future: to form a federation with another school in the area and share administration resources, or amalgamate and share all resources including a head teacher.

However, Mr Pearson said there is another option, even closer collaboration with other local small schools.

He wrote: "It is true that Somerset County Council wishes to set up a technical working group to explore a range of options to, in the words of Michael Jennings (director of education) 'secure the future of the school'."

The working group of education officers, school governors, diocese representatives and others will look at ways to make best use of the school's resources.

He added: "The governors at Nynehead are willing to explore further developments with one very important proviso: they would resist tooth-and-nail any changes which would damage rather than enhance the children's well-being and education."

Mr Pearson will be leaving the school in September after six and a half "special and satisfying" years at Nynehead.
