SOMERSET'S waste services have been labelled as 'fair' but with 'excellent prospects' by Government inspectors.

Following an extensive two year examination by the Audit Commission, the Somerset Waste Partnership, which is responsible for all aspects of waste, from abandoned vehicles to landfill sites and refuse collection, has been told it offers a fair service.

The result reflects on the need for the county to meet tough recycling targets in the next five years, and following an announcement of new kerbside recycling schemes the SWP was told it has excellent prospects.

The waste group comprises collectors Taunton Deane Council and West Somerset District Council, as well as Somerset's three other district councils, with the county council as the waste disposal authority.
