Cornwall Athletic Club completed an excellent track and field season at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre last weekend by retaining their division one title comfortably in the South West Track and Field League.
A strong team of 52 athletes were never seriously challenged at the top of the table, although in the final match, local rivals, Newquay and Par Athletic Club, pushed Cornwall Athletic Club all the way. The Mid Cornwall club were in the lead for much of the afternoon but a strong showing in the relays at the end of the day clinched victory for the defending champions.
There were fewer individual 'A' string wins than usual, with only 12 achieved, although the quality of one performance stood out above the rest. In the Under 17 age group English Schools representative Alex Hitchens won what would have been described before Sunday as his strongest discipline, the discus, throwing 40 metres 73. Few would have expected this performance to be eclipsed by a second victory in the hammer, throwing the "ball and chain" 45 metres 71 to set a new county record. The old record, 44 metres 36, was established ten years ago by Newquay and Par's Brett Marsh, who was also in action at this meeting in the Senior Men's section.
In the same age group, which proved to be the club's most successful of the day, Tom Russell had things all his own way in the 1500 metres (4 minutes 19.3) and 3000 metres (9 minutes 19.6), never having to change into top gear, cruising effortlessly to victory on both occasions.
The club's third double winner was, almost inevitably Jordon West. Jordon won the 800 metres (2 minutes 16.2) and 3000 metres (10 minutes 10.6), although in the longer race, the warm weather made things a little tougher and he had to work harder than usual for his victory.
Team managers, Mandy Sinden, Laura Read and Karen Mulroy were naturally delighted with the team's performance. "Winning the cup earlier in the summer and now retaining the league title is a credit to all the athletes who have supported the club this season. We must thank the RAF Careers who have sponsored the team so generously for a second year and their support is definitely a factor in our success."
