TESCO has postponed plans to build a store in Langport until March, 2002, at the earliest.
The decision means work to breathe new life into North Street, Langport will also be delayed as it is to be funded by the supermarket giant as part of a planning agreement.
Regeneration work in Bow Street and other parts of the town will go ahead as planned.
