TWO wins in successive games was the norm a few seasons ago, but now it represents a major step forward in the rehabilitation of Porthleven's SWL side.
The last time Port won back-to-back games was April 17 and 23, 2004, against Tavistock 4-2 and against Plymouth Parkway 3-0. The last occasion on which they kept two successive clean sheets was on April 8, 12, and 18, 2003, against Bodmin Town, Kiskeard Athletic, and Falmouth Town and were all 3-0 wins.
Admittedly, Callington are the not the greatest of sides, but last season this was a game that might have been out of Porthleven's reach.
Fortunately, Gary Marks has managed to put together a side that, as well as being able to compete, also has some spirit about it.
Indeed, with a little more good fortune in front of goal the Fishermen could have gone on to make it a far more comfortable scoreline, but no doubt the Gala Parc management will settle for finishing one goal in front at the end of every game.
Such was Porthleven's general dominance, goalkeeper Sid Taylor did not have one really dangerous shot to deal with.
Phil Black, Leon Holland and McEwen all showed up in the early stages, but it was defender Scott Clark who made the most important contribution when his tackle stopped Kevin Blatchford unloading when in full cry in front of goal.
