POLICE think they may now know the identity of the driver of a car who was burnt beyond recognition following an horrific single-vehicle collision last week

It is believed that the deceased man lived outside Devon and Cornwall. Identification has still not been completed and will have to be made through his dental records. There are no family members living locally.

The accident happened at about 9.45pm on Thursday, September 15. A blue Vauxhall Nova collided with a lamp post on the eastbound off-slip of the A30 at Tolvaddon, Camborne.

Following the collision, the car ignited and burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. At first, police were not even sure whether it was a man or a woman. The driver was the only occupant and no other vehicles were involved.

The following day, shortly before 11am, two cyclists were injured near the same spot on - the eastbound carriageway of the A30 Camborne Bypass, close to Tolvaddon junction.

A Toyota Avensis was in collision with employees of Co-Op stores in Cornwall who had been taking part in a sponsored cycle ride on behalf of the charity Shelter.

Two cyclists were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro, with serious injuries. They were a 19-year-old woman from Wadebridge and an 18-year-old man from Penzance.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man from Derbyshire, and his 69-year-old female occupant were uninjured, however the lady was taken to hospital a short time after the incident complaining of chest pains.

The A30 was temporarily closed to allow the air ambulance to land on the carriageway.

Officers at Camborne Traffic Unit would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw two cyclists on the A30 between Treswithian and Tolvaddon on September 16 between 10.40am and 11am. Witnesses are asked to contact the police on 08452 777 444 quoting log 447 of 16/09/05.
