A popular fish and chip shop in Helston that has been in the same family for almost 20 years has been taken over by new owners.

Hutchinson's Fish and Chip Shop, at the top of Meneage Steet, had been run by Coleen and David Hutchinson for nearly two decades, but the business has now been sold following the couple's decision to retire.

New owners Sheri and JJ have moved to Helston from Peterborough and have 18 years experience in the trade. Sheri said: "We're delighted to take over. One of the reasons we came here was that Helston is a close knit community - that really did appeal to us. We're very happy to be here. Hopefully we'll have it (the business) for a long time too."

She described the town as "the best kept secret in England" and added that she hoped her family would quickly become part of the community.

"We just want a simple take over. People are nice here and know each other. They say good morning in the street. You don't get that anywhere else," she said.

Sheri said that the couple did not plan to make any changes at the moment, although that did not rule out development in the future.

"There will be no changes for now. Eventually there will be changes, as you always have to update everything. In the catering trade things are fast moving," she said.

She added that they were considering opening seven days a week in the summer, if staff were willing. The staff and the menu will remain the same.

Sheri paid tribute to her predecessors, adding: "The Hutchinsons have been brilliant with this business. They were excellent and hopefully we will be too."

She added that the fish and chip shop business was now a way of life for her family.

"My husband loves this job. He will not do anything else other than fish and chips. It's not just a business it's a way of life you fall in love with," she concluded.

Mr and Mrs Hutchinson are believed to be currently taking a well-deserved rest with a holiday in Scotland.
