A labour of love is an apt description for the work of Richard Gunn from near Crediton in Devon. Richard, aged 30, is building up his business of body repairs, resprays and servicing of agricultural vehicles and plant machines as well as trailers, 360 degree diggers and small cars. At his workshop at the Ridgeway in Morchard Bishop he runs his RDG Services, where he takes particular pride in restoration work and likes nothing better than seeing an old vehicle, in a state of neglect, being restored to its former glory. From an early age he was always fascinated with agricultural machines and vehicles so after leaving school Richard went to Exeter College for three years to gain a City and Guilds qualification in mechanical servicing and repairs - working in garages on day release. Richard improved his motor maintenance skills at Exeter Ford and gained further experience with body repairs and resprays at a local garage workshop. After three years running a bodyshop for a local horse lorry manufacturer Richard then decided to start his own business. Among his clients he does body work for James Pryce Tractors of Tiverton and other agricultural traders. The former Bow Young Farmers member, whose father David is a retired farmer, soon found his skills in demand and one of his highlights was working on Ferguson and other vintage tractors at the Coldridge collection at the Michael Thorne museum. Richard, whose wife Liz is a midwife in Taunton and the father of newly-born Bethany, takes great satisfaction from his work and says he demands high standards from himself. He told South West Farmer: "After three and a half years in this role I took the big step and started my own business - and have not regretted it one bit. I enjoy my work and find every job is very different. I take pride and like nothing better to see an old, tired tractor fully restored." Richard can be contacted at his workshop on 01363 877252.
