The Cornish Labour Party in Cornwall has criticised Liberal Democrat handling of the county council's decision to approve plans for a waste incinerator.

Labour county councillors voted unanimously against the plans approved by the Lib Dem majority.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Labour Party said: "This is typical Lib Dem hypocrisy. MPs like Matthew Taylor are expressing doubts shared by many constituents while Lib Dem councillors approve plans opposed by many local residents.

"All local Lib Dem MPs have previously expressed concerns about these waste proposals.

"Actions speak louder than words and they can't be trusted to stand up for residents on the issues that matter most to local people.

"During last year's elections the Labour Party called for more consultation on waste proposals before a decision was made.

"The Lib Dems simply stalled for time and have now decided to go ahead against the wishes of many local people who want to see more recycling.

"We think Cornwall should be leading the way in developing new environmentally sustainable solutions."
