Packet reporter Gavin Harlow is swapping his pen for a parachute to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

The 24-year-old is gearing up to take part in a tandem parachute jump to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.

Gavin said: "I've always wanted to do a parachute jump. For the last couple of years I've thought about doing one, but the expense of it has always put me off. Then I found out on the internet that you can do them for charity."

The charity holds a special significance as both his mother Catherine, and late grandmother, Irene, have suffered from the disease.

"Mum had breast cancer about two years ago, so it's a charity that's close to my heart. Fingers crossed she's ok now though," explained Gavin.

His grandfather, Bob, has generously offered to pay the full entry fee of £300, meaning every penny of the £1,000 that Gavin has already raised in sponsorship will go to the charity.

"I'm very pleased and it was a big surprise. I thought he would just sponsor me, but paying for the jump was great. It's something that's affected him, when my gran had it, though," he said.

He also thanked everyone who has sponsored him so far.

Gavin is due to carry out the jump at Honiton Airfield on February 11.

"At the moment I'm excited but I think probably the day before and the morning I have to do it, I'll probably be really nervous. I don't mind heights though, which helps," he added.
