CALLS have been made to boost police numbers in Chard and Ilminster after the force failed to deliver on a pledge to provide more officers.

In August, the News reported how senior officers wanted to increase police numbers in Chard and Ilminster from 16 to 23. But that figure has not been met and the recent loss of two officers, who were assigned to a special operation in Ilminster, means numbers have slipped to 19, where they look set to stay.

Chard has recently seen a spate of town centre trouble, prompting civic leaders to demand greater support for the town's over-stretched police.
