THE Holway Green Action Group is seeking legal expertise to help fight against Taunton Deane Council, which is considering selling off the green for housing.

The group is battling against the council's proposals to take part of the green to build affordable housing.

However, residents are angry with that because they regularly use the green for dog walking, children play on the area and adults use the space for exercise.

The council has made the proposal because it needs to meet Government set targets on low cost housing, and they are investigating sites to make that feasible - including Holway Green.

A spokesman for the action group said: "The council and the developer involved have very deep pockets and will take this as far as they deem necessary, but we are a group of residents, relying on donations made within the neighbourhood to keep this battle going.

"If we don't get help and they win, then this could mark the end of the green and open spaces within the Taunton area and beyond.

"No green area will be safe.

"We really need to win this for the health and well-being of the children and adults that use this and all the other available parks."

Anyone who would like to help the action group, either with a donation, or by offering legal advice, should visit the website www.saveholwaygreen.co.uk for more information on contact the secretary on 01823-252636 or treasurer on 01823-368075.
