A FIVEHEAD teenager was so grief stricken after the car he was driving crashed killing his girlfriend, he later attempted to take his own life, say relatives.

Robert Evans, 19, from Langport, was driving a green Citroen ZX on the A378 at Fivehead around 7.15pm on Saturday, April 22, when it came off the road and collided with a tree.

His 17-year-old girlfriend Emily Case, from Street, died from her injuries and his 30-year-old brother Mark and his 17-year-old girlfriend Stacey Bellamy are both stable but critical at Musgrove Park Hospital.

But last Thursday morning Robert was hit by a lorry as he looked at floral tributes laid for Emily at the crash site.

His family believe he may have been so overcome with grief he intentionally walked out in front of the lorry.

His heartbroken grandmother Helen Male, 77, said: "He is such a dear. He is so full of mischief, coming out with cheeky things when he was little.

"And he thought the world of his girlfriend, you see. They were going to get married and I expect he thought he would go with her to be with her. That's what I have been told. I am so worried he will try to do it again."

This is the second tragedy in less than a year for Jean Smith, mother to Robert and his 12 brothers and sister.

Last July her son Michael, 17, died after taking between 10 and 13 ecstasy tablets during a friend's birthday party in Langport.

Dozens of flowers and tributes have been laid at the scene of the accident by family and friends.

Robert's brother Darren said: "He went down to see the flowers and it all got a bit much for him.

"I don't blame him at all doing what he did."

Robert was initially taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with life threatening injuries.

But after emergency surgery he was transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, which specialises in head injuries.

The funeral for Emily, a former student of Strode College, took place on Tuesday.

Her parents gave this tribute: "Emily was a loved and popular girl. She was a keen netball and rounders player in local leagues and also enjoyed pony trekking, ten-pin bowling and was a lover of Chinese food."

The Gazette reported on the first accident last week, when Cllr Gordon Balmer, who lives opposite the crash site, said although there was no indication speed was a factor in the crash, there was a problem with it on the road with six accidents at that same spot in the past year.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on either incident to contact them on 0845-4567000.
