A NEW Walk & Talk scheme is being launched in Hemyock next week to encourage people to get out and about this summer.

The walk, designed for people of all ages and abilities, is Mid Devon Primary Care Trust's latest drive to increase the numbers taking regular gentle exercise.

It comes hot on the heels of similar schemes in Tiverton, Crediton and Cullompton All walks last no longer than 40-minutes and are suitable for pushchairs or people recovering from illness.

Event organiser Helen Buxton-Smith, of Mid Devon Primary Care Trust, said she hoped those who take little or no exercise at present might be tempted to take in a little early summer air.

"Walk and Talk is exactly what it says," she said.

"It's about walking and talking while enjoying the scenery.

"It's really for those people who have thought about getting a bit more exercise but want to do so in a social way."

"By starting with short, easy walks and building up people can exercise and have good fun at the same time," she added.

Trained walk leaders will act as guides on the route, all of which have been carefully risk-assessed.

The first walk starts at the parish hall car park at 2pm on May 4 and these will be followed by similar walks at the same time and place every week.

From May 11, a moderate walk of up to one-and-a-half hours will take place every other Thursday from the same starting point at 6.30pm.
