BANK Holiday Monday is Wellington's May Day extravaganza and reams of people are expected to travel far and wide for the festivities.

The event is to include a whole host of activities and attractions, including swing boats, face painting, live music, dance troupes, balloon modellers and a large selection of stalls.

This year's extravaganza marks the fifth year of the event, organised by the Friends of Wellington Park. Taunton Deane Mayor and Mayoress Richard and Sue Lees, with town council chairman Bob Bowrah, will officially open proceedings in the park at 1.30pm.

Majorettes from Wellington will escort them to the bandstand for an official welcome from Friends chairman Pauline Sturgess.

Weather permitting, the day will feature live music from the Tone Valley Jazz Band and a performance from the Wellington Operatic Society. Children will be entertained with bouncy castles, games and other fun activities.

Beech Primary School PTA will also be providing cooling refreshment with an ice-cream stand.

The Friends will have their own gazebo on the day where visitors can pick up information about the group. They will also be selling raffle tickets. The event runs from 1.30pm-5pm.

Anyone who wants to donate a raffle prize can do so by calling Wellington Friends secretary Mrs Irish Ellins on 01823-664613.
