TOP hygiene awards have been presented to businesses and establishments in West Somerset.

The Somerset Hygiene Awards were presented at a ceremony last week sponsored by DJ Miles & Co Ltd at the West Somerset Council Chambers.

Watchet-based delicatessen Chives, Williton and Minehead hospitals, Broadlands Residential Care Home and West Somerset Community College all attained the coveted award which recognises exemplary achievements in hygiene, healthy eating options and the use of locally sourced food.

The awards were presented by chairman of West Somerset Council, Cllr Barbara Child.

All recipients fully complied with Food Hygiene Regulations and demonstrated that they worked above and beyond the usual legal requirements, including the provision of smoke-free environments.

Owner of Chives, Harry Whiley, who received the award with his wife, Ann, said: "We source 75% to 85% of our food locally - and if we could grow olives, vine leaves and the like in West Somerset, we'd make it 100%!"

Denise Day, head of home at Broadlands House said: "I feel privileged to accept the award on behalf of our small, hard-working team."
