DOCTORS' surgeries across West Somerset have announced they will be closing for half a day next month for staff training.

On Wednesday, May 10, from 1-6.30pm some GP surgeries will closed in order for staff to take part in a half-day educational workshop.

Patients will be given advance notice if their surgery is to temporarily close and will be advised of the arrangements they may need to take should they need access to emergency care.

Other GP surgeries may remain open supported by locum GPs.

The half-day event has been organised by Somerset Coast Primary Care Trust to bring members of its staff and primary care colleagues together to share information, innovation and good practice.

Topics for discussion this year include ways to build better relationships with patients, new ways of treating back pain and developing the Condition Management Programme.

Dr Ian Kelham, a Porlock GP and education advisor to Somerset Coast Primary Care Trust, said: "As busy health professionals, GPs and their practice staff seldom have time to come together for such training events.

"We hope the net effect of this single training afternoon will be to share knowledge and good practice amongst the delegates and as a result, help improve the overall quality of services provided to our patients."
