HINKLEY Point A nuclear power station is looking to take on its first apprentices in ten years - and more jobs are in the pipeline.
The power station ceased generation in 2000 after 35 years of producing electricity and although job numbers initially fell, the number of workers on site has increased significantly in the last 12 months as decommissioning of the site has accelerated.
The British Nuclear Group, which runs the site, has been working with local colleges on a number of training opportunities and the first three apprenticeships are due to start in mid-August, initially running for three years.
The apprenticeships will involve general craft, electrical and mechanical training, and will focus on skills needed for safe and efficient decommissioning.
Posts will be offered to suitable candidates aged between 16 and 18.
Site manager Mark Lesinski said: "This is the start of a rolling programme which will produce a significant investment in young people."
