YEOVIL MP David Laws – who is expected to be one of five LibDems’ in the new coalition Government cabinet with the Conservatives – has said that his party colleagues have fully supported the deal.

Mr Laws, tipped to be Education Secretary, has been widely involved in the negotiations between the LibDems and the Tories following last week’s general election.

LibDem leader Nick Clegg, who has been named as the new Deputy Prime Minister, said that the coalition deal had been ‘overwhelmingly’ endorsed by his party’s MPs and federal executive following a meeting late last night.

Mr Laws emerged from the meeting and said that the deal with the Tories had a ‘lot of Liberal Democrat policies in it.’ And Mr Laws added: “We're in politics to try to change things for the better and I think that people will see when the agreement is published that is exactly what it does and it delivers on many of the manifesto agreements that we have been campaigning on in the last few weeks.

"This is not just a package of constitutional geekery that means something to politicians in Westminster, but this is a package that will do a great deal for the country."

The Conservative-LibDem agreement means that the nation has its first coalition Government for the first time in 70 years.

But how will LibDem voters react to all this? Mr Laws himself gained 31,843 votes to retain the Yeovil constituency seat last week with a massive 13,036 majority over his Conservative rival Kevin Davis.

Mr Laws had said in the election campaign that the only way to keep the Tories out of Yeovil was to vote LibDem – now he is all set to become a part of a Conservative-led Government under Prime Minister David Cameron.

It is expected that some LibDem supporters will not be entirely happy about the situation.
