ONE of Britain’s best known steam trains is making a return to West Somerset Railway this weekend.

The A1 Class Pacific 60163 Tornado will be operating trains daily between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead from Saturday to September 4.

This period includes the Late Summer Weekend on September 3 and 4 when it will be joined in action by another large express steam train Braunton and a 1960’s vintage diesel train.

Tornado is owned by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust but the original fast and powerful A1 design engines, which spent their working lives on the East Coast main line, did not survive.

West Somerset Railway General Manager Paul Conibeare said: "We know from past experience and the visit of the engine earlier this year that the days when Tornado will be in action will be very popular with both our staff and the passengers on the railway.”

Day Rover Tickets for when Tornado is running can be booked by following the link below or by credit or debit card on 01643-704996.

On Saturday and September 2 Tornado will leave Bishops Lydeard at 10.25am and 2.25 pm and Minehead at 12.25 pm and 4.05 pm.

Between August 28 and September 1 its departure times are 11.05 am and 4 pm from Bishops Lydeard and 2.05pm and 5.55 pm.

On September 3 and 4 it is leaving Bishops Lydeard at 9 am and 3pm and Minehead at midday and 6pm.
