CUTCOMBE First School’s pupils have been hard at work rejuvenating a pond as part of a project to enhance the school garden.
The school’s Eco Team, with the support of parents, staff and the community, has helped clear the once overgrown area and is now set to add a range of interactive features.
They include a bog garden and shallow wading area spanning the pond, which will allow children to safely see into its deeper areas.
The work will involve emptying the pond into two holding pools, digging out the area, relining, fencing and replanting before returning the saved creatures and plants.
Pond project co-ordinator Rachael Abraham said: “It is wonderful that the children have the opportunity to get so close to nature and we very much welcome any support to help us enhance these experiences.”
The Friends of Cutcombe School raised half the cost of the £4,000 work and Exmoor National Trust has agreed to pay for a new pond liner and paving slabs.
Support has also come from Somerset County Council’s school grounds grant.
The school still needs half rounds of timber, old quarry stone, old truggs and sand and dumpy bags to complete the work.
Anyone who can help provide the items can contact the school on 01643-841462 and it will arrange collection.
