Somerset County Council has released a list of schools that have already announced they will be closed on Wednesday due to the one-day public sector strike.

County Hall has vowed to maintain essential services on the day as scores of council staff go on strike, but a spokesman added: "Regrettably the industrial action will mean that we won't be able to provide our usual level of services on that day.

"Head teachers are also calling a one day strike on this date and the following schools have informed us of their closure:

A union rally being held in Taunton will affect local traffic entering the town centre.

There will be temporary road closures between 12.30pm and 1.45pm from Canal Road to County Hall via Deane House and the town centre.

The following roads will be affected - Canal Street junction to Priory Bridge Road, Station Road through to Bridge Street, North Street, Fore Street, Corporation Street, Park Street (Debenham’s entrance), Corporation Street and The Crescent.

There is a possibility that some of the larger libraries may not open, but this will only become clear on the day.

If the library is closed, then loan items originally due on that day will be renewed until the next day the library is open.

Bus services and waste collections will not be affected.
