THE first ever recruitment day at Minehead RNLI lifeboat station is being held as part of an urgent search for new volunteers.
Potential crew members will have the chance to visit the station and learn more about the charity’s work on Saturday (June 16) from 9am to 2pm.
Retirements and departures have depleted numbers leaving the station struggling to cope with the absolute minimum of qualified personnel.
Minehead RNLI chairman Dr Bryan Stoner said: “The situation is serious rather than desperate but we cannot afford to let it deteriorate – we need to start recruiting now. “There have already been times recently when we have only just managed to muster a crew. This is a chance to join the world’s most respected sea rescue service. It’s a tremendous, exciting opportunity for any young, fit person aged between 17 and 40.”
People will be able to see the Minehead lifeboat crew in action in the documentary Britain in a Day, set to air at 9pm on Monday on BBC2.
It includes footage helmsman Phil Sanderson shot as he and his crew member son Jake responded to a night-time call last November.
