THE future of Wellington’s youth centre looks more secure after campaigners won a battle to take over the building.
People across the town have been fighting to keep the centre open after Somerset County Council announced it was to substantially cut youth services.
Discussions between an action group and the council resolved that part of the centre would be saved if there was enough interest and, now the council has been convinced to hand over control of building to the town, providing a welcome boost to young people living in Wellington.
Cllr Andrew Govier, who has been involved with the group and has been appointed chairman of the charitable company that will oversee the new venture, said: “We are all determined to keep both the youth centre and services going in the town.
“We have an excellent facility and some first rate youth workers who deliver a great service to our youngsters.”
Councillors were joined by the Rotary Club, Court Fields Community School and the Children’s Centre to rally against the proposed cuts.
Cllr Govier added: “The group has made huge progress but we all realise there is a long way to go.
“We plan to have an open evening in September when we would like to show local people what we have to offer and encourage them to get involved.”
Businesses and organisations have the opportunity to let out half of their youth centre. Interested parties should call Paul Brunsch on 01823-664132 for a tour.
