Monty Don has confirmed his final appearance on Gardeners’ World will air this week.

The veteran broadcaster, 71, shared a video on social media, with a new farewell ahead of his last time hosting the series.

Don will leave the much-loved BBC gardening programme after more than 20 years.

Monty Don confirms date of final Gardeners' World episode

Mr Don said: "This Friday will be my very last Gardeners' World.

"I began 23 years ago.

"For 16 years, we've been filming in this garden with my various dogs, and that's come to an end.

"But it's a brilliant programme as ever, and it's been a complete privilege to be part of it.

"So join me on Friday, for the last time."

He began presenting the show in 2003 from Berryfields in Buckinghamshire, before it relocated in 2011 to his own garden, Longmeadow in Herefordshire.

Mr Don took a three-year break from the programme following a minor stroke in 2008 but returned to continue what would become a defining chapter of his career.

A regular highlight of the show has been the presence of his dogs, from the much-loved golden retriever Nigel, who died in 2020, to his current companion Ned.

Other canine friends who featured on the programme include Brittany spaniel Peggy, who died in January 2026, and Yorkshire terrier Patti, who passed away last month.

Why is Monty Don leaving Gardeners' World?

Monty Don confirmed he was leaving Gardeners' World after 23 years last month.

He opened up on the decision recently when speaking to Gardeners' World Magazine.

Mr Don said: "The commute is delightfully short, but when I go home I take the job with me, seven days a week, 24 hours a day," he said.

He continued: "Then, one day this summer, I woke up and knew it was time to stop.

"Simple as that.

"They say of sportspeople wondering when to retire, 'You just know. Well, I just knew."

Reflecting on his time with the show in a previous statement, Mr Don said: "Throughout that time – and around 700 programmes – I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable, audience.

"That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived."

He also expressed gratitude for the experience of working with the BBC team.

Mr Don said: "I have also always relished the craft of programme making and to do so, week in week out, as part of a superlative BBC team has been a deeply rewarding experience.

"But now is the right time for a change.

"There are more books to write, more programmes to make.

"And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by side, here at Longmeadow."
