THE Home Secretary has warned the two head shops pushing legal highs in Taunton – ‘we’ve got you in our sights’.
Rebecca Pow, who is standing for the Conservatives in Taunton Deane at next May’s General Election, met Theresa May on Monday and handed her a letter voicing concerns about the problems caused by legal high usage in Taunton.
Mrs May said the Government has just published the findings of a review into how to tackle the issue and has announced the next steps it is considering in getting them off our streets - click on the related link on this story to read it.
She added: “Like Rebecca, I am very concerned about the trade in so-called ‘legal highs’.
“The expert panel which the Home Office asked to look at the problem is very clear they present a challenge that cannot be ignored.
“We must not forget the UK has been quicker to respond to this challenge than most other countries, putting in place a Forensic Early Warning System, banning more than 350 substances, and leading the global fight through the United Nations and G7.
“But there is more we can do to tackle these dangerous drugs, which have claimed the lives of far too many young people.
“That’s why we are now looking into the feasibility of a blanket ban on new psychoactive substances across the whole of the UK, clamping down on the suppliers and head shops who push them.
“This approach had a dramatic impact when it was introduced in Ireland, but we must ensure it would work here too.”
