But it seems that whichever way they go once they're here, our visitors are met with litter and other rubbish scattered around our streets and open spaces.

Sue Beale recently snapped an assortment of photos around Taunton that shame our litterbugs and flytippers.

Turning into Station Road less than a minute from the station, the extent of the problem soon becomes clear.

And Mrs Beale took a series of images in locations such as Firepool, St Augustine Street and French Weir.

There was even an ironing board propped up against the wall, along with a couple of plastic bags of rubbish.

Mrs Beale said: "Compared to Bristol, Bath and Exeter, this town is the most uninviting, least interesting and most lacking in shops that attract people, as well as being the most littered."

A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokeswoman said: “The council maintains over 125 hectares of public open space including five Green Flag Award Parks and 92 play areas.

"Litter bins in Wellington and Taunton town centre and in our parks are emptied on a daily basis.

"Regular street inspections are also undertaken by TDBC and our contractors Idverde to ensure standards are kept high.

"Several of these photos appear to be of private land and unfortunately we are not able to deal with those although the council would always encourage people to dispose of their rubbish considerately and is disappointed by instances of fly-tipping and littering wherever they occur.

"Any examples of missed collections, unreasonable litter levels or incidents of fly tipping can be dealt with quickly and effectively by Idverde so we would always recommend reporting them using the online links here or here or through Customer Services on 01823 356356.
