Among the many weekend attractions around Taunton, the National Garden Scheme (supporting nursing charities) opening at Little Yarford Farm, TA2 8AN, attracted over 150 visitors, including children (start 'em young), to a mature garden created over the last 50 years on good loam at the foot of the south-facing Quantocks.
Apart from the generous spread of cream teas (and more) provided by St Thomas Church, Cothelstone, the main attractions are the garden's subtle design and its collection of rare and unusual trees.
Rather than keep to plain species trees, i.e. oak, ash, beech, etc., its owner concentrated on cultivars: specimens with a difference in colour, i.e. purple, gold, variegated.
Adding to this variation in shape and form, one is spoilt for choice among over 300 specimens.
The result is a rich horticultural resource for amateurs and professionals alike.
It very much forms part of our local Somerset heritage.
Just consider the other parks, gardens, and collections in the area.
Taunton has the wherewithal to sell itself as the tree town of the South West and the centre for garden trails galore!
