Like many of us who live in Taunton and have gardens, I’ve long enjoyed the sounds and sight of our native birds as well as our annual visitors.
For some time I’ve provided food for the ones that visit – but there’s a worrying issue.
Much as I appreciate the pleasure that their owners enjoy, my garden is surrounded by sleek, beautiful, well-fed cats that find their way into my garden, none of which seem to be equipped with a warning bell that could alert potential prey.
It’s a sad fact that our native birds are at increasing risk, with many species affected by such hazards as habitat loss, avian flu, climate change - and feline predators.
Perhaps we take our birds too much for granted, but the RSPB are highlighting their serious concerns, and while I appreciate the pleasure that neighbours’ cats enjoy, I hope they might consider providing a warning bell?
