GOVERNMENT Minister for the South-West Jim Knight visited Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital.

Mr Knight met staff and patients in the Old Building and the Beacon Centre as he was shown round by chief executive Jo Cubbon.

He also chatted with apprentices to hear how the trust works with local colleges to encourage career development.

Afterwards he said: “I was extremely impressed with the Beacon Centre - the staff do a fantastic job and the facilities are truly state-of-the-art.

“I also visited one of the wards in the Old Building which was built in 1942 - the staff do a great job in difficult circumstances, but I fully support the hospital’s plans to replace these wards with a new ward block with 112 single rooms with en suite toilet and washing facilities.

“It was also very encouraging to meet a number of the current apprentices at the hospital and some of those who had come through the scheme.”
