MINEHEAD saw Broad Plain House fight back to earn a 3-3 draw in the premier division of the Errea Somerset league yesterday.

Minehead started in an uncompromising mood, storming into a two goal lead inside the first three minutes. With less than 60 seconds on the clock Luke Webber raced through to beat the advancing keeper to the ball and scooped the ball up and over Simon Noble to open the Blues’ account.

Less than 90 seconds later Damion Redman snuck in on the blind side when a deep cross was seemingly left by the visiting defenders and shot home with his trusty left foot to double the Blues’ advantage.

Though shell-shocked for a few more minutes, the visitors, spurred on by their much-travelled captain Luke Picton, who became a rugged thorn in Minehead’s side and a constant driving force throughout the remainder of the game, were soon presented with a couple of good but spurned chances as the home defence seemed to go through their own five minute wobble.

With the game evening out, a corner from the right saw Picton arrive in the box at the perfect time to head home virtually unopposed. Picton then felled Minehead’s George Sinnott, and was penalised by being shown the yellow card by the referee, who indicated that previous incidents had contributed to the caution. Shortly after Minehead’s Luke Bloys, Picton’s opposite number (7), was booked with the referee again giving the same indication of several infringements.

With just over 30 minutes played the visitors were on level terms after home keeper Kyran Wilkins’ had pushed away a cross, defender John Durbin nodded the resulting in at the far post with the home defence in disarray.

Minehead should have finished the half in front when Guy Burns beat four players on a superb run on the right flank which ended with him reaching deep into the penalty area and unselfishly crossing for the well placed Luke Freeman in front of goal, but his side-footed effort from a few yards out came back off the crossbar when it seemed harder to miss than to score.

Early in the second half a good move on the left by the Blues ended with George Sinnott sending in a speculative shot from just outside the box, which looked a relatively comfortable save for Noble, but the keeper appeared to lose the flight of the ball and the promising youngster recorded his first goal for the first XI.

Within ten minutes however the visitors were back on terms when a clumsy challenge from Lee Nunn resulted in a free kick which Picton curled around the wall, which as per Sinnott’s shot Wilkins appeared to have covered but the ball slipped through the keepers hands for another equaliser.

The game remained entertaining, with both teams having chances to claim all three points, and both keepers making saves to keep the scores level. Tempers threatened to boil over at times, with both Picton and Bloys remaining in constant fear of being shown their second yellows.

But at the end of the day a draw was probably the correct result, though the most credit should go to the visitors for fighting their way back into a match which Minehead should have been good enough to see out.
