STAPLEGROVE started the season with victory away to Chew Magna in Division One, but it was a close run thing.

In his first league game as skipper, Will Penny won the toss and chose to bat and his team reached 179-8.

Dave Penny led the way with 43, while Roly Craddock made 36.

In reply, Chew lost their last wicket just one run shy of Staplegrove's target, Will Penny snapping up 3-19.

Wellington lost their first away game since the corresponding game a year ago, when Wedmore were also their opponents.

Wedmore took first knock and recovered from 78-4 to post 230-9 from their 45 overs.

That was thanks largely to a brutal innings of 61 from Frankpitt who hit six sixes, while Simon Rudd took 3-39 in 12 overs for Wellington.

In reply, Wellington were reduced to 69-4 but recovered thanks to Alex Sparks (60) and David Marshall (78) who put on 91 for the fifth wicket.

But when Marshall fell the innings fell away and they were restricted to 225-7.

A young Taunton CS Radiac and Outcasts side, promoted last season, gave a plucky display before going down by 26 runs at home to Wembdon.

After winning the toss, Outcasts made regular inroads into the Wembdon line-up, with only Alex Bailey (71) and Rob Dickens (43) getting on top of the bowling.

West Indian off spinner Rico Weekes took 3-35 from 12 overs for Outcasts.

That allowed Wembdon to reach 202 which looked more than enough as the hosts crashed to 46-6.

Weekes (54) helped rebuild the innings but when he was out, the wickets began to fall again and, despite a quick-fire 29 from skipper Jon Pike, they were all out for 176.

In Division Two, Fitzhead made 200 at home to Huish and Langport before dismissing their opponents for 164.

Watchet restricted Whitchurch to 210-6 and then cruised to their target for the loss of just two wickets.

T. Milton was their hero with the bat, hitting 95, with E. Martin finishing on an unbeaten 62.

Skipper Chris Golding led from the front for North Curry, hitting 82 as his side reached 218-7 away to Broadway and Horton in Division Four. James Midgley was also in the runs, making 42.

The hosts were then skittled out for just 113 thanks largely to Nick Bowey who secured brilliant figures of 6-15 from 12 overs.

John Bishop top scored for Bagborough with 34 in their total of 140-9 away to Kilmington and Stourton who reached their goal for the loss of two batsmen.

A maiden half century from Tom Sergeant (50) saw Taunton St Andrews A to an imposing 251-9 in their inaugural 1st XI League Division Five match at Westonzoyland.

Mike Bradford added 42 and Simon Burge 30.

In reply, Simon Burge took 3-22, with Jas Hoddinott, Tom Burge and James Brice picking up two apiece to help bowl the hosts out for 131.
