TAUNTON Town manager Gary Domone has warned the club their great season could be a one-off if they do not keep the players who took them to the brink of promotion to the BGB Southern League Premier Division.

The Peacocks' promotion bid finally came to an end last Saturday when they went down 2-0 at Swindon Supermarine in the Division One (S&W) play-off final.

They have vastly exceeded expectations despite fielding a side with an average age of around 21 for most of the campaign.

But Domone, who joined the club from Hallen around 18 months ago, is worried their lack of financial clout could see a number leave for new pastures.

He said: "There have already been one or two enquiries about players so it's going to be very difficult to keep hold of them.

"The likes of Steve Cook, Aaron Wilson and Ben Willshire are always going to attract interest so it's up to the club to try and keep them.

"With Bridgwater looking likely to come up, Weston-super-Mare dropping back into the Southern League and Tiverton and Clevedon Town on our doorstep it's going to get harder and harder to keep players.

"With our limited resources, we seem to be the poor neighbours which is a real shame.

"There's not an endless supply of quality young players to choose from and it's been very frustrating to lose them to clubs paying more money."

The restraints on Taunton's playing budget has been a constant headache for managers since they re-joined the Southern League after winning promotion in 2002.

Domone said: "It is a problem Taunton have which makes this season's achievement's all the more impressive. The supporters have been great this season and I like to think we've repaid them.

"We've certainly proved a few people wrong after the criticism we received last season.

"We definitely over-achieved but these youngsters will only get better and, if we can we keep them, there's a lot to be excited about."
