Yatton 25 Wiveliscombe 13

YATTON became Somerset Premier champions with this hard-earned victory over an improving Wivey team, who at one time in the second half were within two points on the scoreboard.

Scoring two tries in a confident start to the game, Yatton had thoughts on a high score victory but Wiveliscombe fought back and played their part in a closely-contested and entertaining match.

Full-back Nick Raymond and winger Liam Chambers scored those two early tries for the home team to go 10-0 in the lead.

Wiveliscombe’s pack showed signs of troubling the home eight right from the kick-off and they scored a try from a powerful driving maul through Finlay Grafton. Dan Quick was successful with the conversion.

Yatton regrouped and scored a try through their forwards with Mark Harding claiming a try.

Wivey’s pack were now in dominant mood and the home team were forced into making errors with the visitors being awarded several penalties, one of which Dan Quick converted to close the gap to 15-10 at half-time.

During a fiercely-contested second half there was little to chose between the teams and both defences proved difficult to penetrate.

Wiveliscombe closed the score to 15-13 with a second Dan Quick penalty.

Yatton were desperate to win to secure top position in the Somerset Premier League and, to the relief of a large home crowd, they scored their fourth bonus point try through Jack Edwards.

Charlie Harrison converted and also added a late penalty to give Yatton a 25-13 victory.

With one match remaining, against Stothert and Pitt at home on April 30, the team will finish in a creditable fifth place in the league and should consider 2015/16 season a successful one.
