West Clubs Women’s League
Sedgemoor Division 1
Minehead Ladies 1sts 1, Mid Somerset 1sts 4

SATURDAY saw Minehead play their first league match of the season at home, resulting in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Mid Somerset.

Minehead’s squad of returning and new players found it difficult to get into a rhythm, with captain Vicky Perkins having to make positional changes during play to get the team working and playing effectively.

The game saw a domineering attacking start from Mid Somerset, with Minehead doggedly defending within their half.

However, Minehead’s concerted efforts failed to stop a shot from the edge of the D, the ball flying into the top of the goal to break the deadlock.

Mid Somerset continued to apply pressure and soon scored their second goal with a pass across the goal being tapped in on the left.

With Perkins’ quick thinking and repositioning of players, the hosts began to battle back, however, and gained a succession of short corners.

This strong pressure in the oppositions D led to a defending error, as a deflection from Mid Somerset went into their own goal to halve the deficit.

Minehead continued to focus their attack, but a breakaway from Mid Somerset resulted in a rebounding shot over the goalie, securing their third goal.

The second half saw the game being more evenly matched, with positive play and relentless pressure from both sides.

Minehead did not capitalise on their numerous short corners, but showed positive attacking and strong defensive play throughout the half.

In the dying last minute a well-fought battle by both teams resulted in Mid Somerset sneaking in a final goal.

The player of the match was Libby Chambers for her strong midfield play.

Minehead Ladies: Dee Lancaster, Hannah Sparks, Hazel Binding, Jan Weetch, Sue Garwood, Vicky Perkins (C), Zoey Cape, Libby Chambers, Freya Harding, Charlie Woodman, Jo Elliott.

Minehead Ladies 2nds, meanwhile, bounced back from their opening defeat in Sedgemoor Division 2 with an emphatic victory.

They went to Weston-super-Mare 3rds and won 4-0.

This coming Saturday, Minehead Ladies 1sts are away to Yeovil & Sherborne 2nds (11.30am start), while the 2nds entertain White Eagles 3rds (10.30am).

Saturday also brings the first league games for Minehead’s men’s teams.
