WIVELISCOMBE, as the result suggests, were far too strong for a Bridgwater team who – to their credit – never gave up, writes Roger Bellamy

Results such as as this benefit no-one, and the visiting club should be concerned that a local derby should produce a hugely one-sided game.

The home team were on the scoreboard within a couple of minutes, with Finley Grafton crossing for the opening try.

Sadly, the visitors lost a player through a nasty-looking leg injury in the early stages of the match, with the game delayed until an ambulance could attend the incident.

The Bridgwater defence did the best they could, but the home team were in no mood to give less than 100 per cent, and scored points at every opportunity.

Ten more tries were added in a one-sided first half, as Dean Rawles crossed for a hat-trick and Richard Wike and Ali Vivian claimed two each.

Centre Ted Keay, Matt Ellis and Anthony Delacour scored one apiece, with full-back Dan Quick converting nine of the tries to give Wivey a 78-0 half-time lead.

Five more tries followed in the second half, with wingers Sam Gibbs and Freddie Green crossing for two apiece.

Grafton scored the final try, his second, while Quick added a further two conversions.

A BIG crowd, bolstered by a large number of vice-presidents, saw the Red & Blacks achieve their fifth consecutive league victory and keep up the pressure on league leaders Penryn, writes Allyn Chetland

George Hodgson returned to the squad, replacing the injured Ethan Staker, while Chris Batts stepped up from the bench with Danny Lee returning to the pack.

The first 20 minutes of the half was a competitive affair, with the visitors from Devon putting up stubborn and resilient defence, coupled with some excellent passages of attacking play.

The deadlock was broken just after the 20-minute mark by the hosts, as winger Nev Pitman crossed for a well-worked team try, and Alex Davey made no mistake with extra points.

This try was the spur that the R&Bs needed to go onto bigger and better phases of play whilst it had the opposite affect for the visitors who struggled to contain the now free flowing R&Bs .

The next 20 minutes saw the R&Bs dominate, running in another three tries, two of these via Pitman and one by Davey, with Davey converting two to make the half-time score 26-0.

The hosts dominated immediately from the restart, with Tavistock rarely threatening, and second row Regan Walker crashed over, his try converted by Davey, to extend the lead and further demoralise Tavistock.

The R&Bs took full advantage, scoring further tries through George Hodgson, flanker Liam Phillips, a fourth for Pitman and the final try from scrum-half Corey Jenkinson, with Davey converting four.

The final 10 minutes saw Tavistock camped on the home side’s line, desperately seeking a deserved consolation try.

But resolute and aggressive defence from the R&Bs saw these efforts go unrewarded, and the final score was 59-0.

Scoring four tries, Pitman thoroughly deservedly the plaudits in the clubhouse afterwards, but not far behind him in the pecking order was full-back Davey, who had his best all-round game of the season so far.

The whole squad can be very content with their contributions to this entertaining victory, the only slight injury concern is No.8 Micky Norman who left the field halfway through the second half with a groin injury.

Next week Wellington travel to Torrington, a club they have not visited for a number of seasons.

Somerset 2 South
Weston-super-Mare 4ths 30, Wiveliscombe 2nds 14

WIVELISCOMBE’S 2nd XV were late arriving for their Somerset 2 South encounter at Weston Super Mare because of traffic problems on the motorway.

With little time to warm up, the West Somerset team were 10-0 down in as many minutes, with a well-drilled home team taking full advantage.

Wivey gradually worked their way into the game, and competed well to score two tries through Trevor Coates and Jake Woodward, with Gareth Bellamy converting both.

The seasiders went on to complete the victory, but Wivey gave a good account of themselves against a useful home team.

THIS coming Saturday (November 4), Wivey’s table-topping 1st XV are away to sixth-placed Weston-super-Mare 2nds in Somerset Premier.

The Wivey 2nds, fifth in their league, will be confident of success as they play host to bottom side Tor 2nds.
