FIRST year Oake Manor assistant Matt Turner shocked an experienced field to take a one-shot lead into the second round of the 36-hole Order of Merit Players Championship at Cumberwell Park.

The talented 29-year-old left hander, who made his OoM debut in the Total Triumph Classic and finished 30th on his home course, leapfrogged the field with a succession of accurate iron shots and superb putting.

He made nine threes, including an eagle on the 11th and seven birdies, four on the opening nine.

This proved decisive on a day where several of the big guns failed to fire.

But he failed to reproduce the form on the second day and carded one over par 72 to finish in a tie for sixth.

He said: “This was my best result as a professional and hope I can build on it."

Enmore Park pro David Dixon was edged out for the overall winners prize, losing out by two shots to Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle).

Dixon, who is enjoying a successful season on a variety of tours, carded 66, after a slow first round start. But this year’s Scottish Par 3 champion returned with six birdies for the day’s best back nine of 30.

He was Bebb’s closest challenger and at one stage looked the probable winner.

He eventually fell two shots short and rued a missed four-footer on the tough 15th for his second bogey of the round and a ten-foot eagle putt after driving the 17th green.
