TAUNTON Tennis Club member Kerry Quirk has been crowned the British Closed Grass Court Singles Over-40s champion.

Quirk, the manager of Taunton Tennis Centre at Blackbrook Leisure Centre, dropped only two games in her three matches at the finals in Surbiton last week, defeating her closest rival, Elizabeth Bennett, 6-1 6-0, in the final match of the round-robin format.

Quirk won the British Clay Court Singles Over-40s Championship last year, and ranked sixth nationally and 91st internationally before this tournament.

The win will help her get seeded in other tournaments; she is now preparing for a tournament in Mallorca in October.

Somerset County Gazette:

CHAMPIONS: Taunton captain Elliott Rugg receives the singles trophy.

TAUNTON Tennis Club’s mixed A team have beaten Wellington 9-0 in their final match of the season to win Division 1 of the West Somerset Tennis League.

Needing seven points to get past Taunton School, Elliott Rugg, Kelly Cunningham, Laurence Paul and Hayley Collins made no mistake.

A combination of good serving, consistent play and sound tactics meant the team dropped only four games in eight sets, in captain Rugg’s last match for the club.

The win was the icing on the cake of a successful season for the club.

Both teams in the North Somerset League won promotion: the men to Division 2 and the women to Division 1.

In the Yeovil & District League, the men’s team won Division 2, while the mixed B team finished in mid-table in Division 2 of the West Somerset League.
